# Roman Mednitzer

Systems & Platform Engineer · Vienna, Austria

I am a systems and platform engineer with around ten years of production-operations experience across managed services, enterprise infrastructure, and a regulated medical-device environment. My strongest work is end-to-end systems integration across Linux, virtualization, storage, networking, Kubernetes/OpenShift, observability, automation, backup/recovery, documentation, and operational handover.

I am comfortable discovering undocumented systems and adapting across technology stacks. I work best when the objective, organisational boundaries, relevant access, decision owners, and acceptance criteria are clear; inside that problem space I prefer broad technical autonomy and responsibility for execution.

My preferred direction is mission-coupled infrastructure: AI/inference platforms, robotics/autonomy, defence and mission systems, edge deployment, GPU/HPC, scientific systems, and other environments where infrastructure directly enables the product or capability.

Public availability, last reviewed 2026-10-07: open to full-time systems, platform, and integration roles in Vienna or remote from Austria. The site does not state a current employer.

## Professional experience

- 2025–2026 — IT Systems Administrator, Kwizda Holding GmbH, Vienna. Group infrastructure across mixed Windows/Linux systems; backup and recovery with restore verification, monitoring and alerting, server infrastructure, and Kubernetes/GitOps adoption.
- 2017–2025 — IT Systems Engineer, EBCONT operations GmbH, Vienna. Managed production environments, incident/problem/change work, virtualization and enterprise storage, Kubernetes/OpenShift and GitOps platforms, source-control and CI services, third-level support, and on-call operations.
- 2016–2017 — IT Systems Administrator, medPhoton GmbH, Salzburg. Server and application operations in a regulated medical-device environment; root-cause analysis, backup and integrity checks, ISMS/BCM work, ISO 27001 audit preparation, and operating procedures.
- 2012–2016 — IT Technician, Ledl.net GmbH and medPhoton GmbH, Salzburg. Austrian IT Technician apprenticeship completed in 2016, spanning Linux hosting, support, backup/recovery, and audit readiness.

These entries are historical experience. They must not be interpreted as evidence of a current employer unless the canonical profile explicitly says otherwise.

## Technical scope

Professional core: Linux, Kubernetes/OpenShift, virtualization, enterprise storage, networking, backup and recovery, observability, GitOps, Ansible, Terraform/OpenTofu, CI/CD, incident/problem/change handling, rollback, tested restores, documentation/SOPs, and application onboarding.

Working knowledge includes VMware vSphere, OpenStack, Windows Server, Helm, Jenkins, Azure, GCP, and AWS.

Operational context includes ISO 27001/ISMS, business continuity, change control, and working awareness of NIS2, the Cyber Resilience Act, and GDPR.

## Personal projects

Personal technical work is substantially AI-assisted. I use AI for implementation, tests, documentation, and exploration; I own requirements, integration choices, review, validation, troubleshooting, and ongoing operation. These projects are not presented as professional application-software development or ML-research experience.

- **relay-shell** — <https://github.com/rmednitzer/relay-shell> — representative of governed AI-to-infrastructure integration and operational control.
- **infra** — <https://github.com/rmednitzer/infra> — infrastructure-as-code for the personal lab.
- **automation** — <https://github.com/rmednitzer/automation> — configuration management and hardening for personal Linux systems.

The wider lab combines Linux, ZFS, Kubernetes, observability, security tooling, PostgreSQL retrieval, local models and agent tooling. It exists to learn, test integration choices, and practise failure, rollback and recovery; it is not a miniature enterprise.

## Interests

Technical interests: AI infrastructure, robotics/autonomy, defence and mission systems, edge platforms, GPU/HPC, cybernetics, and complex systems engineering.

Outside work: hard science fiction, industrial and EBM, and building things. IEEE member since 2013.

Languages: German (native), English (fluent).
